Background[]

Cockatiels are a great beginner bird. They are not too loud, but their high pitched call can be annoying. A variety of mutations are available. Sometimes the male and female look alike, but not often. If necessary, DNA sexing will tell you if it's accurate gender. They have sweet personalities and will bond easily. They tend to beak grind and yawn more than other species.

Housing[]

They need a cage of at least 24x24x24 with a bar spacing of 1/2 inch. They tend to like shiny objects, so get bells, but don't go overboard with them.

Feeding[]

A cockatiel needs a varied diet of pellets, fruit, vegetables, grains, and occasional lean meat.

Grooming[]

These birds need a bath more once a week, either misted or in a small container of water, due to their powder feathers. Nail trims are needed so they don't get caught, and wing trimming is optional. Beak trimming is up to your vet.

Health Concerns[]

They need at least a yearly checkup at the vet and whenever they are sick.
